Diabetes mellitus

A 26-year-old woman presents with fever, flank pain, nausea, and generalized abdominal pain. She has a history of Type 1 diabetes mellitus. Laboratory studies show a white cell count of 18 x 103/mm3, pyuria, white cell casts in the urine, and mild hematuria. She was begun on antibiotic therapy but developed sepsis and died. Images of her kidneys are shown below.

 

The bacteria which MOST likely caused the infection was
1. Proteus sp.
2. E. coli
3. Pseudomonas
4. Enterobacter
5. Staphylococcus saprophyticus
